Stanwell Moor - 10 July 2014

We arrived quite late and only put up 4 nets in the reedbed. There were a few Swifts and hirundines around with a couple of Hobbys passing through not long after 8pm. We weren't expecting that much since Hobbys usually have a way of deterring Swallows and Sand Martins from the site, so were quite happy with 3 juvenile Swallows, early on, along with the Reed Warbler, Chiffchaffs and Garden Warbler that were caught in the reedbed.

3JJ Swallow

We weren't to know it but we really should have packed up after the Swallows as there was no roost, even though the Hobbys were long gone. We sat pondering the expanding deposit of claylike earth that has been added to each time we come on site and wondered whether,at some point, we'll arrive to find that we're no longer able to access the area where we ring. Then, just as it got dark enough to need headlamps, we took the nets down and departed.

Yet more earth arrives. Just one more change to the Stanwell site.
