Bernwood Forest and Braddenham - 21 June 2014

With being away in Paris over the weekend of 13-16 June, time was running out for another catch up with Black Hairstreaks at Bernwood Forest, which tend to peak within quite a narrow flight period, so can be difficult to see any numbers outside the main flight period, and this proved to be true on this visit. Despite being fairly hot, with some good sunny periods, after quite a while waiting, I only saw two, both fortunately came down low to nectar. There were reports of Silver-washed Fritilliary and White Admiral, but I saw neither and apart from Ringlets, Meadow Browns, Large Skipper, a fair few Marbled Whites, and some remaining Common Blues it was fairly quite.

On the way back, I paid a quick visit to Bradenham as Dark Green Fritilliary had been reported and I found unlike the Hairstreak there were probably around 20 plus in flight, along with many Marbled Whites, and the odd remain Common Blue, plus Meadow Browns and Large Skippers.
