Lakenheath Fen - 7th June 2021

We had to make a visit to Suffolk for other reasons, so after this was done we dropped into Lakenheath Fen. A mid afternoon visit on a hot, but gusty day was unlikely to produce too much birdlife, but there was a lot of Cuckoo activity which was pleasant to constantly listen to as we walked around, and a couple of good flight views of two different Bitterns was especially pleasant. No Cranes were seen, but at this time of year this was not unexpected. Plenty of Odonata were seen, but virtually no butterflies! Variable Damselflies were found in a corner near the washes, amongst the more common Damselflies around, and 17 Four-spotted Chasers, seven Hairy Dragonflies, eight Scarce Chasers and nine Black-tailed Skimmers were seen.
