Getterön Fågelstation - 14th & 15th September 2016

Light SSE winds promised good migration weather and birds should be dropping in. We had extra help too as Margarett
a and Kirsten joined us. Tapes were set to encourage Meadow Pipits down to the net, Reed Warblers in the reedbed and mixed warblers on some of the other nets.

Meadow Pipits began arriving shortly after first light. The first few rounds in the reedbed gave us some Reed Warblers and Reed Buntings, while there were more Chiffchaff and Blackcap. We caught our first Lesser Redpolls.

We have noticed a few flocks of Starlings and were told by Margareta that the flocks will number into the thousands later in the season. If we want to try a roost it had better be before there are too many.

Another good day for migrants. A light wind, no rain and warm although the temperature was set to reach 26 degrees in the afternoon.

A first round that included Song Thrush, Northern Wheatear and Goldcrest, all species that we've not ringed here before, showed that birds had dropped in. The second round included 12 Chiffchaff, all from the same net! We cleared and ringed all morning, continuing into the early afternoon as some nets continued to catch. There were even a few Starling from the garden nets.

The morning total surpassed 200 new birds!

During the afternoon, I spotted a Greylag Goose with a yellow neck band, marked H78  in black letters. This was first ringed in 2008 in Germany and has been seen in several different locations since.
